Man holds hostage in SLC standoff with police

A robbery suspect took a hostage and barricaded himself in a west Salt Lake City hotel Friday night, police said.
Police evacuated the area around the Allstar Travel Motor Hotels at 754 W. North Temple and negotiated by phone with the man, believed to be Joe Dee Stang, an Idaho inmate who escaped from a work-release program in early July.
Police suspect Stang, a 45-year-old convicted burglar, may have been involved in a Thursday robbery of a Utah Zions Bank branch.
