Doctor accused of writing bogus prescriptions

A Brigham City orthopedic surgeon often prescribed painkillers without a legitimate medical reason and without conducting an exam, leading to the death of a patient, a federal indictment issued Thursday claims.
The indictment charges Dewey C. MacKay III, 63, with 130 counts related to his prescription of about 3.5 million pills of oxycodone and hydrocodone products since 2005. He has denied wrongdoing through his attorney.
